Jacob Stewart

Software engineer building automation, data pipelines, and full-stack applications — mostly TypeScript, React, Node, and SQL. I'm at my best replacing a manual process with something that just runs itself.

About

I came to software sideways. I finished a chemical engineering degree at UNM, spent a couple of years as a project engineer modeling costs for commercial construction, and kept noticing that the most valuable thing I did each week was write something to kill the spreadsheet work nobody wanted to do.

That turned into the actual job. At New Mexico Gas Company I build automation, SQL reporting, and internal tooling — the kind of work where success looks like twenty hours of manual effort per cycle simply disappearing. I finished a B.S. in Computer Science at Oregon State in 2026 to put real foundations under what I'd taught myself along the way.

Outside of work I build full-stack: REST APIs, auth, relational schema design. I like the parts other people find tedious — getting the data model right, making a slow query fast, and deleting a manual process permanently.

Spreadsheet Validation Pipeline

New Mexico Gas Company

Hundreds of spreadsheets arrive on a recurring cycle, each needing to be reconciled against the others and against the system of record. It cost 20+ hours of manual review per cycle and still let errors through. I wrote a pipeline that ingests the full set, normalizes inconsistent formats, and flags mismatches for a human to look at. The manual pass went away and the error rate went with it.

Risk Ranking Model

New Mexico Gas Company

Prioritization was being decided by judgment call, which made it hard to reproduce and harder to defend. I built a weighted scoring model and evaluation matrix that rates each candidate against consistent criteria, turning a subjective argument into a ranked list anyone can audit and re-run as the inputs change.

job-tracker

2026 · Capstone

Full-stack app for running a job search end to end: applications and their statuses, the skills each one calls for, the recruiters and interviewers attached to them, and a dashboard that rolls the whole thing up. A TypeScript REST API sits over a normalized MySQL schema with many-to-many joins between jobs, skills, and contacts; auth is JWT-protected routes with bcrypt hashing and token-validated password reset. React + Vite on the front, with an automated Postman/Newman suite covering the API.

Experience

  1. Engineer II

    New Mexico Gas Company

    Feb 2022 — Present  ·  Albuquerque, NM

    • Developed and maintained a Power BI reporting platform on live SQL Server connections, giving stakeholders real-time visibility into operational data.
    • Wrote and tuned SQL against production sources to extract, join, and validate records feeding recurring reporting and DOT compliance workflows.
    • Built the automation and risk-scoring tooling described above, replacing recurring manual processes with maintainable code.
    • Worked with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment to gather requirements and iterate on internal tooling.
  2. Project Engineer

    Western Partitions, Inc.

    Nov 2019 — Oct 2021  ·  Albuquerque, NM

    • Modeled labor, material, and equipment costs for large-scale commercial construction, including data center builds.
    • Analyzed performance against schedule and budget baselines, surfacing variances early enough to act on them.
    • Managed change orders and scope adjustments across internal teams and external stakeholders through close-out.
